Early Tuesday morning, a man was killed and a woman was injured in a shooting on the near southeast side of Indianapolis, according to the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD). Officers were dispatched to the scene around 5:45 a.m. and found a woman with gunshot wounds near Shelby and Raymond streets. IMPD public information officer Tommy Thompson said the woman was "in stable condition" and had gone down the street to seek help before being transported to an area hospital, as Fox59 reported.
Following directions from the injured woman, police discovered a fatally wounded man in an alley on the 1600 block of Tabor Street. According to IMPD statements obtained by WISH-TV, the man was pronounced dead at the scene, roughly half a mile east of where the woman was found. Neighbors had heard multiple bangs early in the morning, and one resident recounted to Fox59, a neighbor had told her that someone had banged on her window asking for help. IMPD hasn't disclosed further details on the extent of the woman's injuries or the circumstances that led to the shooting.
The Indianapolis community, described by Thompson as "very tight-knit," was left shaken by the incident. Crime scene investigators from the Marion County Indianapolis Forensic Service Agency were reported to be conducting their investigation at the scene. Officers from the IMPD Homicide unit remained at the scene for some time, as mentioned in the Fox59 article. The area near Raymond and Shelby streets, one of the two primary locations connected to the incident, has since been cleared.
Records from IMPD, highlighted by Fox59, show several police responses to the address where the shooting occurred in recent months, suggesting there may have been previous issues at the location. IMPD is actively seeking eyewitness accounts and surveillance video that could aid in the ongoing investigation. Thompson mentioned that no weapon had been recovered at the crime scene, as per WTHR's coverage. The Marion County Coroner's Office will identify the deceased man once family notification has been made. Anyone with information is urged to contact IMPD at 317-327-3475 or Crime Stoppers of Central Indiana at 317-262-8477.
