Yesterday morning, first responders rescued a man after his silver Ford Taurus was partially submerged in water at Mill Race Park. The Columbus Police Department in Indiana reported on social media post that the call came in around 9:18 a.m., sending police officers and firefighters to the area near Carl Miske Drive and Indianapolis Road.
When responders arrived, they found the driver alive inside the sinking vehicle. CPD Officer Jacob Driver and CFD Firefighter Seth Burton entered the water, while the team on shore used ropes to pull the car closer to the bank. The responders broke a car window to safely remove the 31-year-old driver. Preliminary investigation suggests he may have had a medical issue that caused the vehicle to leave the road and enter the water. He was taken to the hospital with only minor injuries.
Multiple agencies were involved in the rescue, including the Columbus Police Department, Columbus Fire Department, Bartholomew County Sheriff’s Office, Columbus Regional Hospital Ambulance, and Columbus Township Fire Department. CPD Chief Steve Norman praised the efforts of everyone involved and also thanked the citizens who made the emergency calls.
The driver’s medical condition confirms that the injuries were minor. Additional details are expected as the investigation continues.
