In an emotionally charged event at Memorial Hospital West, staff members donned new roles as they put together a wedding for cancer patient, Richard Parague, and his partner of over a decade, Kareen Bowler. According to a report by WSVN, the makeshift wedding was assembled in just two days, with the hospital's team going above and beyond to fulfill Parague's wish.
With grocery chain Publix donating the wedding cake and hospital workers curating decorations and providing music, the ceremony was a clear departure from tradition. "With these nurses and doctors, they all put it together and I love them so much. They're part of my family," Karen Bowler expressed in a statement obtained by WSVN. Richard Parague had been recovering from a bone marrow transplant after battling blood cancer, and his condition added a sense of urgency to the celebration.
Details from an NBC Miami report describe oncology nurses serving as flower girls and a physical therapist taking on the role of the wedding singer. "I don't think this happens every day, and we feel very fortunate to be able to do this,” said bone marrow transplant nurse Richard Perla Lopez.
Maria Weinstein, Director of Nursing, spoke to the hospital's commitment, mentioning staff's roles in "putting together balloons and ordering cake and ordering food and creating speeches so that they really can be part of this patient celebration," as confirmed by NBC Miami. The patient's wife highlighted her vigilance during his healthcare ordeal. "While he was sick, I never left his side through thick and thin. I cry day, I cry night, but I never leave it, because I know I see the light at the end of the tunnel, and I will never give up,” Bowler told NBC Miami.
As Parague points out the importance of his care team, he reflects, "He brought me the full purpose, and I'm so grateful that he spared my life. My doctor, Dr. Fernandez, he told me I was right on the edge. So I've come a long ways, and I thank God for that,” expressing gratitude for both his renewed health and the chance to celebrate his love within the hospital walls, as reported by NBC Miami.
