Memphis Police Department Sergeant Christopher Currie is currently off duty and under investigation after his recent arrest in Oakland, Tennessee. Currie was taken into custody on Tuesday and is facing several charges, including domestic assault and child endangerment. According to Action News 5, the sergeant has been released on a $20,000 bond from the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office.
In addition to the aforementioned charges, Currie is also dealing with evading arrest, resisting arrest, and a stop sign violation. Relieved of his duties for the time being, the MPD is conducting an internal investigation, as reported by WREG. A domestic altercation with a female acquaintance lies at the center of this case.
The incident unfolded when Oakland Police responded to a reported disturbance on Wild Oak just before 7:15 p.m. on Tuesday evening. "As a result of their initial investigation Currie was arrested for simple domestic assault, non-violent child abuse and neglect, evading arrest in a vehicle, and resisting stop and arrest," according to FOX13 Memphis. Currie allegedly attempted to leave the scene with two children after officers had ordered him to stop.
The Oakland Police Department is heading the investigation into the charges against Currie, while the Memphis Police Department assures the public that they have opened an internal investigation. Despite no further details of the incident being released, the swift action by the MPD echoes their protocol when officers are accused of misconduct, promising a thorough investigation and maintaining that Currie will remain off duty until further notice. The Memphis community waits as the legal process unfolds, resonating with the gravity of the allegations that placed not just a sergeant, but a protector of the peace, on the opposite side of the law it is sworn to uphold.
