Miami Beach will honor Gloria Estefan, the "Queen of Latin Pop," by renaming 13th Street off Ocean Drive after her. According to Local 10, the city will officially dedicate the street in recognition of Estefan’s impact on music and her connection to South Florida.
The location holds personal significance for Estefan, who co-owns the Cardozo Hotel at the corner of 13th Street and Ocean Drive. WSVN reports that the street naming ceremony, organized by the City of Miami Beach, is scheduled for this morning. Estefan, known for hits such as “Turn the Beat Around,” “Words Get in the Way,” and “Conga,” has shared memories of visiting Miami Beach as a child with her grandfather, adding a nostalgic link to the area.
Community members have shown support for the tribute. Melanie Maslany, a visitor from Philadelphia, told Local 10 that it is important to celebrate women who make a difference in their communities. Wasem Marie, visiting from Toronto, also expressed admiration for Estefan’s contributions to music and the Miami Beach community.
The Miami Beach Commission for Women led the effort to rename the street. The event, set for today at 11 a.m., will include the official renaming followed by a celebratory brunch, as outlined in recommendations from the commission and adopted by the city.
