The streets of Miami Beach will soon echo with more than just the sounds of the ocean waves and bustling crowds; they will carry the name of a local legend beloved by runners and residents alike. Miami Beach has announced its intention to honor a man whose dedication to the sport of running has been unwavering for the past five decades. Robert “Raven” Kraft — a steadfast presence on South Beach — has his name slated to be emblazoned upon 3 Street, adjacent to the path where he has clocked countless miles.
According to a Miami Beach city press release, the ceremony dedicating the newly christened Robert Raven Kraft Way will take place on Friday at 11 a.m., this event will not only celebrate Kraft's commitment to running but also his 75th birthday, creating a double commemoration for the local figure whose consistency has offered inspiration for so many, he ran 8 miles a day for 48 years, then dialed back to 5 miles demonstrating an unwavering commitment that many aspire to but few achieve.
In a statement obtained by Miami Beach city officials, Miami Beach Commissioner Kristen Rosen Gonzalez, the sponsor of the measure to honor Kraft, expressed her admiration for his resilience: “The Raven is a true story of resilience, day after day, year after year, he has never given up, and this is an important lesson for all of us.” Commissioner Gonzalez's words highlight the broader significance of Kraft's daily ritual — a testament to the power of perseverance and constancy in a world often marked by transience.
Miami Beach Mayor Steven Meiner also spoke highly of Kraft's impact, stating, “Raven is a living monument to wellness and the ultimate icon of the resilience and tenacity that defines Miami Beach,” Mayor Meiner extolled the runner's emblematic status in the context of Miami Beach's transformation into a hub for health and fitness, signaling that honoring Kraft is inextricably tied to the city's vision of fostering a vibrant, active community. After failing to find his footing as a songwriter in Nashville, Kraft turned his passion to the pavements, an endeavor that has captured the attention of publications such as Runner's World and led to the 2017 book "Running with Raven" by Laura Lee Huttenbach, detailing the profound community that has formed in his slipstream.
