Miami Beach is set to pay homage to one of its most iconic residents, Gloria Estefan, by naming a street in her honor. The Miami Beach City Commission has announced that the four-time Grammy winner and long-time Miami Beach local is to be celebrated for her contributions to the city through a dedication ceremony, as reported by the City of Miami Beach’s official website. The event, scheduled for Oct. 13 at 11 a.m., will see a section of the city's famed Ocean Drive, at 13 Street, renamed in Estefan's honor.
Estefan's ties to the Miami Beach area run deep, with both her music and business endeavors significantly contributing to the city's cultural landscape. "Gloria Estefan is a true Miami Beach treasure,” Miami Beach Mayor Steven Meiner said in an official statement obtained by the city's website. The mayor highlighted the Estefans’ role as proud business owners and their impact on the historic Cardozo Hotel on Ocean Drive. Their contribution, Meiner notes, is "woven into the very fabric of our city."
This illustrious performer, acclaimed for successfully bridging Latin music with mainstream pop, is known globally for hits like "Turn The Beat Around" and "Conga." In these tunes, rhythm and melody transcend the barriers of language, inviting every listener to tap into the vibrant legacy of her Cuban-American essence. Miami Beach Commissioner Laura Dominguez praised Estefan’s accomplishments and life journey, "Gloria embodies the American dream,” Dominguez remarked, as per the city's announcement.
