On October 27, Miami-Dade County will launch its first Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system, the Metro Express, providing a new travel option along the busy US-1 corridor. Announced by Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava and the Department of Transportation and Public Works (DTPW), the all-electric service will operate between Florida City and the Dadeland South Metrorail Station. According to the Miami-Dade County’s press release, Metro Express is described as the nation’s longest all-electric BRT system and is expected to offer a more efficient and reliable commute for South Dade residents.
A ribbon-cutting ceremony is scheduled for Wednesday next week from 10:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., featuring remarks from Mayor Levine Cava, an inaugural bus ride, and a preview of the new service. The Metro Express will operate on a dedicated lane, separated by gate arms during peak hours, connecting South Dade residents to destinations such as job centers, schools, parks, and shopping areas.
The system will include 14 BRT stations equipped with air-conditioned waiting areas, level boarding, water fountains, and free Wi-Fi. Passengers will also be able to pay before boarding to speed up service.
Part of the county’s Strategic Miami Area Rapid Transit (SMART) Program, the $300 million project is jointly funded by Miami-Dade County, the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT), and the Federal Transit Administration (FTA).
Residents interested in attending the ceremony must RSVP by noon on Friday, through the link provided by the Miami-Dade County.
