Fire safety takes center stage at Miami Dade College North Campus this week, as Miami-Dade Fire Rescue, in collaboration with the UHealth/Jackson Miami Burn Center and local fire departments, launches the 37th Annual Children’s Fire Safety Festival. Coinciding with the start of Fire Prevention Month, the event kicked off on Oct. 6 and runs through Oct. 9, according to the county's official website.
Designed primarily for kindergarten through second-grade students, the festival presents an array of interactive stations where children can learn essential safety skills such as the 'Stop, Drop & Roll' technique, and smart practices for fire prevention at home and especially in high-risk areas like kitchens and bathrooms. One of the featured simulations will plunge young attendees into the urgency of an emergency call, training them on the proper way to interact with 911 operators.
The opening day festivities began at 9:30 a.m. with an inaugural ceremony that set the stage for a week-long opportunity to foster awareness among children in a nurturing environment. Special attention is given at the festival to practical, lifesaving techniques, stripping down complex safety messages into child-friendly, digestible information, as detailed by the county's press release.
