On a typical evening in Milford, Massachusetts, what began as a routine well-being check swiftly turned into a tense standoff between police officers and a local resident. According to a social media post by the Milford Police Department, the Family Services Unit, accompanied by a clinically trained professional, were dispatched to a home on Congress Street yesterday around 6:45 p.m. to conduct a well-being check when they encountered Darren Esslinger.
The situation unexpectedly escalated as Esslinger barricaded himself in the kitchen, arming himself with a kitchen knife and threatening the officers. Nonetheless, in a matter of minutes, by 6:59 p.m., the police managed to successfully defuse the dangerous situation. Chief of Police Robert Tusino acknowledged the restraint and professionalism exhibited by his officers, saying, "I'd like to commend the officers and clinician of our Family Services Unit for their professionalism and restraint." Tusino remarked on the often tragic outcomes that can occur in such volatile encounters.
As a result of the confrontation, Darren Esslinger now faces several serious charges, including assault with intent to murder and assault with a dangerous weapon. He was taken into custody and held on a $10,000 bail. The police emphasized in their report that "all suspects are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law."
