In a decisive move underscoring its commitment to immigrant rights, the City of Minneapolis has teamed up with eight other local governments to actively challenge the Trump administration. The collective filed a lawsuit aimed at blocking the federal government from imposing what they consider to be unlawful conditions on essential funding for emergency preparedness.
Minneapolis councilmember Jason Chavez took to social media to decisively express opposition to the administration's tactics, saying, "The Trump Administration and their inhumane treatment and views of our immigrant neighbors have no place in our city." He revealed that the federal funds in contention amount to nearly $3.6 million, which are deployed primarily to pay for critical disaster response roles in the city. The lawsuit seeks to prevent the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) from using these funds to indirectly enforce unrelated political objectives, Chavez posted on Facebook.
Alongside these legal maneuvers, Chavez, in collaboration with Council Vice President Chughtai and Council Member Chowdhury, is tirelessly working to reinforce the city's separation ordinance. This legislation is designed to protect residents by prohibiting city staff from inquiring about a person’s citizenship or immigration status, requesting documents to confirm such status, or utilizing any known status to push forward immigration law enforcement.
"I will continue to fight for our immigrant neighbors, and I won’t back down," Chavez asserted, urging Minneapolis residents to remain vigilant and to share "know your rights" information within their communities. He further emphasized the importance of solidarity in these trying times: "Please hug your loved ones. We will get through this together," he encouraged.
