As colder weather approaches, the Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT) will conduct its annual statewide winter operations drill tomorrow. The drill will involve increased activity of MoDOT vehicles on state routes, beginning at 8 a.m. in rural areas and at 9 a.m. in urban areas, and concluding by 3 p.m. According to MoDOT, approximately 16% of the agency’s plow operators have less than one year of experience, and 40% have less than three years.

With approximately 2,400 snowplow operators across Missouri, MoDOT's winter preparation includes a full deployment of personnel during a simulated scenario involving a forecast of significant snowfall across the state. The exercise includes activation of emergency operations centers and the deployment of all available trucks and staff. As part of the training, communication systems are tested, and all equipment, including trucks and tractors, undergoes detailed inspection and calibration.

Last winter, MoDOT spent more than $64 million on operations, using 160,000 tons of salt along with substantial amounts of salt brine and beet juice to maintain road conditions. The annual drill, however, goes beyond preparation and logistics. It serves to confirm that all employees are using the correct equipment, plowing techniques, and safety procedures.

MoDOT advises drivers to use the Traveler Information Map at traveler.modot.org for current road conditions during winter weather. The map is also available as a mobile app for both Apple and Android devices. These tools are part of MoDOT’s winter operations to provide updated travel information and support roadway safety.
