A tragic accident occurred on a busy East Bay freeway yesterday, claiming the life of a motorcyclist. As reported by ABC7 News, the collision happened in the afternoon around 2:30 p.m. on eastbound Interstate Highway 80, just west of Powell Street in Oakland. The California Highway Patrol was promptly on the scene to investigate. The incident involved a mix of vehicles: a Honda motorcycle, a Toyota Prius, a Tesla Model S, and a Subaru Crosstrek, according to information from CHP Officer AS Zeid.
The collision not only resulted in a fatality, but it also led to significant traffic disruptions. KTVU's coverage detailed that several lanes were blocked following the crash, underscoring the severity of the incident. Witnesses captured footage showing the aftermath, with the motorcycle down and heavily damaged. Drugs or alcohol, which often contribute to such accidents, were not believed to be factors in this case, Zeid told ABC7 News.
The eastbound lanes of I-80, specifically the first, second, and third lanes were shut down for close to an hour and a half as the investigation took place. The California Highway Patrol confirmed to KTVU that the lanes were completely reopened to traffic at approximately 4:20 p.m. on the same day.
