
A person was fatally struck by a Memphis Police Department squad car near the University of Memphis Park Avenue campus on Thursday. The collision occurred at the intersection of Park Avenue and Getwell Road, with Memphis Police Department confirming the vehicle was on duty at the time, according to Action News 5.
The incident occurred shortly before 7 p.m., with emergency responders arriving at the scene at 6:41 p.m. The individual involved was transported to the hospital with critical injuries and later died, as reported by FOX13 Memphis. Authorities have not released the victim’s identity. Investigations are underway, including whether the Memphis Police Department officer involved was responding to an active call at the time of the accident.
Around 9:45 p.m., Memphis Police Department officials issued a traffic alert advising motorists to avoid the area due to "a traffic investigation," with lane closures expected to remain until further notice, as detailed by Local Memphis. The Tennessee Highway Patrol has taken over the investigation. The intersection remained closed late on Thursday while authorities worked the scene.
