For those living in or traveling to New Orleans today, the National Weather Service has a wind advisory in effect until 7 PM CDT. Strong and gusty conditions are expected to persist throughout the day, possibly disrupting routine activities and outdoor plans. The forecast details northwest winds blowing at 15 to 25 mph, with gusts that could reach up to 40 mph.
Residents should be aware, particularly in Metro New Orleans where the advisory is concentrating its concerns, that unsecured items left outdoors could become projectiles due to the wind. According to the NWS, "Gusty winds will blow around unsecured objects. Tree limbs could be blown down and a few power outages may result." Driving may also be difficult, especially for those in high-profile vehicles – a caution that umbrellas for individuals with narrow frames might be turned inside out.
Apart from today's wind advisory, the rest of the week's weather seems more tame by comparison. The NWS expects sunny days with highs gradually climbing from the mid-60s to the mid-70s by Tuesday. The nights forecasted to remain partly cloudy to clear with moderate lows in the 50s, making for pleasant evenings to enjoy the autumn air, cautiously awaiting the 20 percent chance of showers on Saturday night.
The crisp fall also brings clear visibility, estimated at 10 miles, and despite the wind's efforts, the relative humidity at 75 percent suggests the air will feel less biting. The dewpoint stands at a comfortable 53°F today, falling to a low near 51°F on Thursday night. The clarity of these facts, shining through the advisory, suggests that while the wind might be a fleeting challenge, days of calm skies and mild weather are waiting for us on the other side. Residents should still take care to secure loose items and perhaps avoid making the trees strained by wind to clean up any fragile decorations, considering the potential for those limbs to come down.
