The North Canton Police Department swiftly responded to the crisis, which began at around 8:50 AM when a female resident, hindered by a language barrier, reported being injured. Within minutes, another call confirmed shots had been fired, propelling the first officer to urgently make their way to the scene by 8:55 AM, as per the NCPD press release.
The officers, upon entry into the victim's apartment, were met with a situation that quickly turned from calm to chaotic. With bullets ripping through walls around 9:06 AM, an area that was initially deemed a 'warm zone' became a battlefield, forcing officers and a medic to fond cover and retreat. Exhibiting a swift and decisive action commonly seen in crises, the on-scene sergeant managed to remove a bedroom window, creating an escape route for the endangered parties. The victim, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds, was safely extracted from this perilous situation. By 9:07 AM, SWAT was called in, and additional assistance was requested from various county and federal agencies, including the FBI and ATF.
The suspect, 38-year-old Brian Keith Francisco II, barricaded himself in his apartment, from where he had fired indiscriminately through the wall and into his neighbor's home. After a standoff, SWAT breached Francisco's apartment at 10:46 AM, taking him into custody two minutes later without further incident. An AR-style rifle, a handgun, and ammunition were recovered, marking an end to the terror. Francisco now faces multiple felony charges, including felonious assault and improperly discharging a firearm, with his mugshot available through Stark County Jail upon request.
While the incident could have escalated further, thanks to the rapid response, no additional injuries occurred, and all law enforcement personnel remained unharmed. Schools and local businesses had been put on lockdown during the incident, but the scene has since been stabilized, and lockdowns have been lifted.
