Oklahoma's own Ellen Buettner is stepping into a new role as the freshly appointed Chief Executive Officer of the Regional University System of Oklahoma (RUSO). Known for her vast experience in public service, Buettner has been lauded by the governor for her leadership abilities and commitment to the state. Stitt expressed his confidence in a statement, saying, "Her experience and proven track record make her the right leader to guide RUSO into the future. I am confident she will be a strong advocate for students and institutions across our state," as recently announced by Governor Kevin Stitt,
Buettner, who has already made her mark as CEO of the Oklahoma Health Care Authority (OHCA), is credited for leading significant initiatives that aim to directly benefit over one million Oklahomans. Her efforts have notably included expanding Medicaid, reforming delivery systems, and improving access to maternal health. Moreover, she was instrumental in seamlessly transitioning state employee benefits administration over to the OHCA.
The breadth of Buettner's career spans multiple leadership roles within the state, including stints at the Oklahoma Attorney General's Office, and the Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services. Her education also aligns strongly with her chosen path; she boasts a hefty roster of qualifications from the University of Oklahoma. Here, she earned not just her undergraduate and law degrees but went on to also secure a master's in administrative leadership, culminating in a Ph.D. in communication.
Embracing the challenge, Buettner commented on the appointment, "I am honored by Governor Stitt’s confidence and excited for the opportunity to lead the Regional University System of Oklahoma." She continued to strongly advocate for the importance of regional universities, stating, "Our regional universities play an essential role in the development of Oklahoma’s workforce. I’m eager to get to work making our regional university system top ten in the nation." This statement, as reported on the Office of the Governor's official news release, encapsulates the new CEO's commitment and aspirational goals for the state's education system.
Buettner's appointment is the latest step in Governor Stitt's ongoing campaign to strengthen Oklahoma's educational infrastructure and workforce development. Her track record in state service, particularly her advancements at OHCA, set a strong precedent for the Office she is about to take command of.
