Tragedy struck again in Hamilton Heights, as a balloon release vigil meant to honor a life lost to violence became the scene of further bloodshed. According to St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department reports, gunfire erupted around 7 p.m. on Wells Avenue last night, leaving one dead and four others injured. Officers who arrived at the 5900 block were quickly confronted with the stark aftermath of the shooting.
District 5 officers wasted no time to respond and dealt with the immediacy of the violence that unfolded in front of witnesses gathered to mourn. Their preliminary investigation is pointing toward an exchange of gunfire initiated by a group as they approached the vigil. Angelo Davis, aged 18, sustained multiple gunshot wounds and ultimately succumbed to his injuries at the hospital. Davis's family has been notified of the tragic loss.
The shooting did not end with Davis's death; four more men, aged between 20 and 33, were also struck by bullets in the incident. Currently, a 21-year-old man is battling for his life, his condition described as critical and unstable. The other three victims are also receiving medical treatment, though their conditions have not been made public at this moment.
As the community grapples to make sense of the chaos, detectives have a challenging road ahead to untangle the details of the event. They are working diligently to not only provide care to those affected but to also identify any individuals who may not just be victims, but also perpetrators. From the scene, officers have managed to recover at least one firearm so far.
