An Orange County high school confrontation turned deadly when a 15-year-old student allegedly shot and killed a 16-year-old classmate, said Sheriff John Mina. The incident, described as stemming from a seemingly trivial encounter, led to a planned fight and then escalated to manslaughter. The fight was set to take place on basketball courts near the school after an unresolved hallway bump, according to Mina's comments reported by WFTV.
During a nonchalant juvenile court hearing, where his family shouting out to him once he learned he would not be released pending trial, the accused 15-year-old, Jacori Redding, who previously faced charges of grand theft auto, smiled. Sheriff Mina articulated his frustration about the escalation of what should have been a minor incident. "I'm really angry that something as small as bumping into someone in the halls of a high school, something that we've all done, has now turned into a deadly shooting of a 16-year-old," Mina mentioned in a statement obtained by FOX 35.
The deceased, Pinien Dalmacy, was a sophomore who had been with Orange County Public Schools since his freshman year. The school district extended condolences to Dalmacy's family and offered counseling to any students or staff affected by the tragedy, as noted by a district spokesperson speaking to WFTV.
While running back into the high school with the gun hidden in his backpack, after the shooting the suspect was apprehended in the cafeteria. The authorities located Dalmacy with two gunshot wounds at Vogt-Melloon Park's basketball courts, not far from Oak Ridge High School. The suspect now faces charges of manslaughter with a firearm, along with possession of a firearm on school property, as detailed in the report from FOX 35.
