A tragic incident unfolded yesterday evening in downtown Indianapolis when a pedestrian was fatally struck by a van. The accident occurred at the intersection of Illinois and Maryland streets, around 7:45 p.m., as confirmed by the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department. WTHR and multiple other sources reported that the emergency response team found the male victim down in the street, who was subsequently rushed to the hospital in critical condition but succumbed to his injuries a short time later.
The driver of the minivan, an unidentified adult male, stayed at the scene and is actively cooperating with the police investigation, according to information provided by all reporting outlets. Walking onto South Illinois Street and laying down, the pedestrian was then hit by the northbound vehicle, as indicated by the preliminary investigation. The minivan's driver was subjected to a chemical test for impairment, which is mandatory following accidents that result in severe injury or fatality, yet police do not suspect impairment played a role, WRTV highlighted.
The identity of the deceased has yet to be released pending notification of next of kin. Piecing together the events that led to this unfortunate demise, IMPD's investigators are scrutinizing the scene and circumstances leading up to the collision. The Marion County Coroner’s Office has taken on the duty to ascertain the exact cause of the pedestrian's death, as both FOX59 and WRTV reported.
