Phoenix area drivers, brace yourselves for a weekend of detours and delays as the Arizona Department of Transportation rolls out freeway improvement projects. From Oct. 24-27, closures and lane restrictions will be in play, affecting travel times across the region. According to the Arizona Department of Transportation's announcement, motorists are encouraged to plan ahead and consider alternative routes to mitigate the expected traffic congestion.
One of the significant shutdowns includes the southbound I-17, closing between Jomax and Deer Valley roads in north Phoenix from 9 p.m. Friday to 10 a.m. Saturday for pavement sealing. As a part of this initiative, the northbound I-17 will also see closures between Loop 101 and Jomax Road during the latter part of the weekend. Traffic will be redirected to the southbound 19th Avenue and westbound Deer Valley Road, for southbound commuters, and the northbound 19th Avenue and westbound Jomax Road, for those heading north, as reported by the Arizona Department of Transportation.
Arizona Department of Transportation's Weekend Freeway Travel Advisory states eastbound I-10 will be off-limits between Avondale Boulevard and 75th Avenue from 9 p.m. Friday to 10 a.m. Saturday, attributing to pavement marking work. This undertaking extends to westbound I-10 as well, with its corridor between 75th Avenue and Avondale Boulevard out of commission from 9 p.m. Saturday to 10 a.m. Sunday. Detour options will direct travelers to nearby thoroughfares like Van Buren Street or McDowell Road as feasible alternatives.
Furthermore, traffic on the northbound Loop 101 will compress to two lanes between I-10 and Bell Road, starting 9 p.m. Friday until noon Saturday, while the westbound Loop 202 (Santan Freeway) primary ramp will shutter from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. both Saturday and Sunday, nonetheless, the westbound Loop 202 HOV ramp will remain accessible to westbound I-10 traffic. These measures are set in place as the Arizona Department of Transportation continues to fulfill the city's need for an enhanced transportation infrastructure. "Most improvement projects are currently funded in part by Proposition 400," an authorized sales tax initiative embraced by Maricopa County voters in 2004, and the recently approved Proposition 479 which prolongs the existing tax to usher in future projects.
