The Phoenix Police Department, facing the aftermath of six officer-involved shootings in the past six weeks, is taking action to address community concerns. Chief Matt Giordano released a statement highlighting the department's commitment to improving its practices and reinforcing training focused on de-escalation.
Understanding the severity of the situation, Chief Giordano assures the public that each incident is met with thorough reviews for accountability. According to the Phoenix government, He states, "Policing demands courage, split-second decision making, and compassion in the toughest moments," acknowledging the complexities and challenges faced by officers in volatile situations. They're launching a mandatory department-wide refresher on Integrating Communications, Assessment, and Tactics (ICAT) and revisiting Use of Force policies. There will also be a new Advanced Training Review for personnel involved in critical incidents within a 30-day period, targeting key skills such as communication, tactics, and officer safety.
Furthermore, the department is enhancing its Crisis Intervention Training program and continuing to expand access to less-lethal tools. This includes the introduction of Pepper Ball and 40mm launchers and the provisioning of Taser 10 devices.
