Phoenix Police have released a video with critical details regarding an officer-involved shooting on October 11 which resulted in the death of a man wielding a machete. The Phoenix Police Department's Critical Incident Briefing shares insights into the events that unfolded near the crossroads of 83rd Avenue and Indian School Road, according to the official statement.
The incident commenced close to 8 p.m. after police were summoned by multiple 911 calls about a domestic altercation. Reports described a man, machete in hand, assaulting his wife and threatening those attempting to intervene. The first officer to arrive at the apartment complex encountered a perilous scene: a man pressing the blade against a woman lying on the ground. Despite the officer's commands, the man refused to release the victim and, consequently, the officer discharged his weapon, fatally wounding the assailant.
Paramedics declared the assailant dead at the scene, while the woman sustained minor injuries and was subsequently treated and released at the location. Phoenix officials confirmed that no additional injuries were reported during the altercation and the machete was secured by investigators on site.
The officer involved, a member of the Maryvale Estrella Mountain Precinct, is a veteran with six years of policing experience, albeit less than a year with the Phoenix PD. As the event is under both criminal and administrative examination, the Maricopa County Attorney's Office, along with the Department's Major Incident Division, are spearheading investigations to determine if the officer’s actions align with legal and departmental policies.
