In a recent turn of events on the Treasure Coast, a 19-year-old named Pasqual Velasquez Martin has been accused of throwing a rock at an Immigration and Customs Enforcement vehicle, an incident that took place outside a Wawa in Port St. Lucie. Apparently, the act of defiance followed the arrest of his father by federal agents and resulted in the teen being charged with the crime of throwing a deadly object into the vehicle; he is currently held on a $25,000 bond, WESH reports.
Amidst ongoing ICE operations to enhance immigration enforcement in the area, tensions have heightened, and local police are becoming increasingly involved, the Port St. Lucie Police Department (PSLPD) responded to the incident on Tuesday morning, and the scenario led to the apprehension of Velasquez when he shattered the rear back window of an agent's car and attempted to flee, he was quickly captured by multiple agents stationed in the vicinity, as detailed in a Facebook post by PSLPD.
Chief Leo Niemczyk of PSLPD has emphasized the importance of local support in these federal initiatives, asserting that “We’re the agency that’s right here, right? In these situations, they had fleeing people, and they called upon us for assistance, and that’s what we’re going to do,” as CBS12 reported.
The increased enforcement efforts by ICE have not gone unchallenged, as recent protests have erupted in front of an ICE facility in Stuart, where another arrest occurred, highlighting the community's divided reaction to the operations, South Florida Immigration Attorney Mayra Joli urged those displeased to consider more secure methods of expression, suggesting that “They cannot think that going out and protesting against ICE to stop something that shouldn’t happen in the first place it’s safer for everyone to have the criminal or the perpetrator being picked up at a facility instead of letting them on the street,” she explained to CBS12. While these developments unfold, more demonstrations are anticipated, and the local authorities plan to closely monitor any further instances of civil unrest that may arise.
