A Riverview High School eleventh grader, named Elred Hardy III, is facing serious charges after being caught with a blade on school grounds. In a post yesterday from the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office's Facebook page, officials detailed last Friday incident where Hardy, aged 16, was found to be in possession of a "kitchen-style fixed blade" in his backpack.
After a tip came in about a possible fight brewing on campus, involving Hardy, school administrators moved quickly. Having carried out a search, the weapon was made aware by the administrators stationed at the school. Hardy was subsequently arrested by law enforcement once the blade was discovered. The incident was reportedly spurred by an argument Hardy had with another male student over a female student, which then escalated into threats of violence.
The Sheriff’s Office's post has confirmed that Hardy now faces charges for "Possession of a Weapon on School Property and Disrupting School Campus or Function." During the investigation, a set of details emerged painting a complex picture of adolescent conflict and its potential for escalation when mixed with the availability of dangerous items.
The ongoing investigation by law enforcement will surely bring more details to light. Meanwhile, Riverview High School, like many others, will continue grappling with the delicate balance of ensuring student safety without creating a climate of fear or paranoia among its young charges.
