San Francisco Bay Area, get ready to enjoy some nice weather through Friday before a significant change brings rain and potentially hazardous beach conditions this weekend. According to the latest updates from the National Weather Service San Francisco, there will be "a fantastic afternoon with clear skies, light winds, and temperatures reaching mid 70s inland with 60s along the coast" for Thursday.
As for the weekend, it's time to prepare for some beneficial rain across the Bay Area. The forecast now predicts that "rain will arrive later, and won't be as wet as we thought a couple days ago," according to the NWS San Francisco. But even with fewer inches on the gauge, the rain is expected to be a welcome reprieve after a dry spell. As the atmospheric river moves through quickly from north to south on Saturday, ensembles suggest that precipitation water (PW) will reach between 200-250% of normal, but in a thin ribbon.
The long-awaited swell is also about to make a comeback. Starting Friday, beachgoers should know that "a moderate to long period northwesterly swell will result in breaking waves of 12 to 17 feet," and potentially up to 25 feet in some areas, per the NWS San Francisco. A Beach Hazards Statement is in effect from late Thursday night through late Sunday, indicating the heightened risk for sneaker waves and rip currents.
For those with maritime interests, it is essential to note the Small Craft Advisory updates. There are various advisories across the regions, such as Small Craft Advisory until 9 PM PDT this evening for Pt Arena to Pt Reyes 0-10 nm, and extending along the coast to Pt Piedras Blancas. Mariners are advised to exercise caution given the rough seas and increased winds.
