A violent encounter at Shawarma Azmi, located on the Mid-Market's 6th Street, almost ended in tragedy last Saturday. The restaurant's owner, Azmi Murait, was attacked with a knife by a woman following a request for the suspect and her associates to vacate the premises due to suspected drug activity. KTVU reports that the incident, captured on the restaurant's surveillance video, shows a rapidly escalating confrontation that led to Murait defending himself with a metal colander.
After an object thrown by the suspect, what began as a simple request turned violent, prompting Murait to toss a receipt holder back at her. Claiming to recognize the suspect as a frequent visitor to the restaurant tables and restroom, Murait told KTVU, "If I saw anybody dealing with the drugs, no matter who he is, I get mad right away." He further stated he tried to scare the woman with a lighter, yet instead, she grabbed a knife.
The ensuing scuffle, during which Murait faced stabbings and even had to fend off the attacker with kitchen equipment, culminated with him locking the suspect in the restaurant until police arrived. The San Francisco Police Department was quick to respond, detaining and arresting the assailant, 39-year-old Tynthia Bouza. She was later booked on felony charges, including assault with a deadly weapon and vandalism, as was confirmed by the SFPD on social media.
