
Early this morning, San José Police Department officers were called to a scene of a tragic accident on Bascom Avenue, where a pedestrian was fatally struck by a garbage truck. According to a statement issued by SJPD, the collision occurred around 4:05 AM when a blue Peterbilt garbage truck collided with an individual who was obscured by blankets in a driveway. The accident represents the city's 29th traffic fatality this year, further highlighting a disturbing trend.
The identity of the pedestrian has yet to be released pending notification of next of kin. The victim, identified only as an adult male, was rushed to a local hospital following the incident but later was pronounced dead. The garbage truck driver, who stayed at the scene, has been cooperating with the police investigation into what is the 14th pedestrian fatality in San José for the year 2025.
