Sen. Emanuel Jones (D–Decatur) has called for the immediate dismissal of DeKalb County School District Superintendent Dr. Devon Horton following a federal indictment on charges of wire fraud, embezzlement, and tax evasion. According to the Georgia State Senate Press Office, the indictment alleges that Horton was involved in acts of corruption and kickbacks related to public contracts.
Jones criticized the DeKalb School Board for renewing Horton’s contract despite reports of an ongoing federal investigation. He also urged the Georgia Governor to intervene and review the superintendent’s position if the board does not act.
Referencing past state involvement in district matters, Jones stressed the importance of maintaining integrity in school leadership and ensuring the district’s focus remains on students and education.
