San Francisco's sense of safety is shaken once again as Bill Gene Hobbs, the convicted serial harasser released from prison, finds himself back in police custody for allegedly violating parole terms. According to the San Francisco Chronicle, Hobbs, who had been previously convicted for a series of groping and assault incidents, was seen approaching women after his recent release, sparking concern among city residents.
Hobbs was booked on suspicion of a parole violation around 4:50 PM yesterday. While no bond was set and the violation's specifics were not disclosed, the nature of his parole terms underlies the severity of this development. Residents once plagued by Hobbs' actions recounted NextDoor and Reddit postings detailing his return, leading to fear and dismay within the community, particularly among those familiar with his pattern of behavior.
Reports from the KTVU highlight the tension in areas like Dolores Park and the Castro, where Hobbs was reportedly seen. Rian Dixon, a visitor to Dolores Park, expressed her alarm, saying, "It's not surprising to hear that's happening, but still very upsetting." Anda Chisster, also present at the park, added a resigned note on the issue, stating, "I was catcalled just this morning. It happens. I'm just gonna like wash it off, trusting that I would know what to do in this situation as part of the ability to handle living in this day and age."
The specter of Hobbs' return was particularly chilling for one resident, Crista, 28, who, according to the San Francisco Chronicle, experienced a recent unsettling encounter believed to be with Hobbs. "He had that sparkly, crazy look in his eyes," she said, describing the alleged interaction, which escalated to Hobbs grabbing her arm and trying to converse. Only after she insisted did he walk ahead, allowing her to snap a photo of the man she suspected was Hobbs, notably spotting an ankle monitor.
Authorities are taking this incident seriously, with the San Francisco District Attorney's Office affirming swift action if Hobbs has breached any parole terms. "If he violates the terms of his parole or commits any new crimes while on parole, we will not hesitate to take action to have his parole immediately revoked and/or file new criminal charges as appropriate," a spokesperson conveyed, per the San Francisco Chronicle. As of the latest reports, Hobbs' listing as a sex offender remains absent from the Megan’s Law website, underscoring the importance of stringent monitoring and community awareness for such high-risk individuals.
