The St. Bernard Parish Sheriff's Office is reminding residents to take part in National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day. The event will be held on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Walgreens, located at 100 W. Judge Perez Drive in Chalmette. Residents can safely dispose of unused or expired prescription and over-the-counter medications during the event, as per the St. Bernard Parish Sheriff's Office's Facebook post.
Agents from the SBSO Narcotics Unit of the Special Investigations Division will assist with the collection. Sheriff James Pohlmann said the initiative helps prevent medications from being misused or sold illegally.
The Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) launched the program in 2010, and it has since collected over 4.8 million pounds of prescription drugs nationwide. For those unable to attend, the St. Bernard Parish Sheriff’s Office maintains a year-round medication drop box at its substation at 4700 Paris Road in Chalmette.
