Residents of St. Lucie County can expect a boost in public transportation services thanks to a substantial grant from the Federal Transit Administration (FTA). The county commissioners have successfully obtained a "super grant" totaling over $5 million, as reported by CBS12. The grant, combined with local funds from St. Lucie County's Transit Municipal Services Taxing Unit, amasses a total project investment of $6,274,810.
According to the county's announcement, this financial injection will facilitate the purchase of new transit vehicles that promise to improve service reliability, reduce wait times, and offer better customer service, the new fleet will also increase trip capacity, ensuring that residents can get where they need to go more efficiently. Paratransit assistance, a crucial part of the funding, will ensure that services are equitable, especially by suporting the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) non-fixed route service, which includes providing door-to-door transit for essential life activities.
Further enhancements through this initiative include equipment upgrades to improve routing efficiency and the implementation of automatic passenger counters. These counters will collect accurate usage data, necessary for federal reporting and for refining travel patterns for heightened efficiency. "This award allows us to maintain daily operations while making capital investments that directly benefit riders," Transit Director Adolfo Covelli explained, illustrating the dual purpose of meeting current needs and funding future improvements, according to the county's release.
The impact of this "Super Grant," which combines resources under Sections 5307 (Urbanized Area Formula) and 5339 (Bus and Bus Facilities), does more than just augment the area's mobility; it alleviates local financial pressures, allowing the community to focus taxes and reserves on other critical needs without compromising on expanding public transportation. Residents seeking additional information on routes, schedules, or fare details can turn to the St. Lucie County Area Regional Transit (ART) site for guidance and updates on the improvements backed by this latest grant.
