This week, Stark County Sheriff's Office is stepping up its game in honor of National School Bus Safety Week, highlighting the critical need to keep students safe on their daily commutes. True to their word, deputies will be actively involved in ensuring that safety protocols are strictly adhered to, doing everything from riding on buses to policing the school zones. Their presence will be felt across several districts, including Canton Local Schools, East Canton Schools, Lake Local Schools, Marlington Local Schools, Plain Local Schools, and Tuslaw Local Schools.
As part of the efforts to heighten security measures, the Stark County Sheriff's Office took to social media to remind drivers of the importance of stopping completely when a school bus has its red lights flashing and stop-arm extended. They hope to actively continue to foster an environment where the youngest members of the community can travel safely. The statement on their Facebook page straightforwardly insists, "It’s the law to stop completely when a school bus has its red lights flashing and stop-arm extended. 🛑 Let’s work together to keep our kids safe!"
It's a concerted effort that aims to reduce any risks posed to students who are more vulnerable outside the bus than when seated inside it. School buses are often cited as one of the safest modes of transportation for young students, and the measures taken this week are there to ensure that this standard of safety extends beyond the bus itself, creating a secure perimeter as children alight and cross the roads.
