In a move to enhance sustainability and safety, the Statesville Fire Department has unveiled a new program for the residents of Statesville, North Carolina, that provides a secure way to dispose of rechargeable batteries. The Call2Recycle "One Drum" collection program features a special recycling container for the public's use at Station 1, announced the Statesville Fire Department recently.
The dedicated container is thoughtfully designed as a 55-gallon steel drum lined with fire-suppressant granulate to store and transport various dry-cell batteries safely. Ensuring compliance with stringent safety standards, the drum meets U.S. DOT Special Permit 21706. This initiative primarily aims to curb the fire hazards associated with the improper disposal of batteries such as lithium-ion, widely used in today's devices from smartphones to e-bikes. However, it is important to note that the program does not accept damaged, defective, or leaking batteries, as well as wet-cell or spillable types.
For those wondering about the more commonplace batteries, traditional alkaline batteries—sizes AA, AAA, C, and D—shouldn't be a cause for concern. You may continue to put them in the regular household trash since they are manufactured primarily with common metals and are mercury-free. This disposal method aligns with broader environmental considerations while simplifying waste management for residents.
Fire Marshal Pete Morrison expressed the department's commitment to both environmental stewardship and safety. "This is another step in protecting both our environment and our first responders," Morrison said as per the Statesville Fire Department, highlighting the fire risk posed by lithium-ion batteries when they are not disposed of properly. By implementing a dedicated recycling site, the department is enhancing the community's safety and its commitment to sustainable practices.
Statesville locals can contribute to this eco-friendly initiative by visiting Station 1 at 822 Fifth Street within the hours of operation, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., seven days a week. Questions regarding the battery recycling program can be directed to the Statesville Fire Marshal’s Office at 704-768-5599.
