The Johnson City Fire Department (JCFD) has announced that Steve Alexander brings his 22 years of firefighting prowess to the role of fire marshal, stepping up from his interim position held since mid-September. With a career that began in the thick of fire suppression, Alexander has climbed the ranks from firefighter to driver/engineer, then to lieutenant and district chief in the Johnson City Fire Department. Reporting the appointment, the City of Johnson City release highlights Alexander's seasoned expertise in a statement.
"Fire prevention looks very different from fire suppression, but both are essential to keeping Johnson City safe," Alexander explained his philosophy. According to the City of Johnson City news, his new duties extend to overseeing the Fire Prevention Division, which includes four fire prevention officers. The Division operates on a broad spectrum of public safety, managing fire code enforcement, conducting building inspections, taking charge of fire investigations, and leading community risk reduction programs. As the officers navigate these responsibilities, the weight of ensuring safety and compliance rests on Alexander's shoulders, a mantle he has assumed amidst their chances of facing emergencies.
Under Alexander's leadership, the approach to fire prevention and safety is holistic, acknowledging the importance of investment in people and processes. "This position is about more than inspections and investigations," he communicated the gravity of his role in the same release. "It's about relationships, trust, and education." He plans to deepen engagement with stakeholders and seek advancements in team training and resource accessibility to secure the pinnacle of public service for the City of Johnson City.
Prior to his fire services career, Alexander serves in the U.S. Navy as an avionics technician. While he continues to advance his formal education, currently pursuing a bachelor's degree in Public Administration at Liberty University, his life's work has been rooted deeply in the call to protect and serve — a devotion echoed by JCFD Chief David Bell. "Fire Marshal Alexander has shown exceptional dedication to the Johnson City Fire Department and the community," Bell praised Alexander's unwavering commitment in the City of Johnson City news release. Understanding that prevention holds the front line fort in public safety, his expertise mirrors the department's mission to serve with excellence.
