Early Wednesday morning, Los Angeles witnessed a high-speed car chase involving a suspect in a stolen white Toyota Avalon, which turned into a hectic foot pursuit across the 101 Freeway. The Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) began the chase around 6 a.m. in downtown Los Angeles at Ninth and San Pedro Streets; it spanned various neighborhoods, including Echo Park and Hollywood, as reported by FOX LA.
According to CBS Los Angeles, the driver displayed dangerous behavior such as swerving in and out of lanes and running through several intersections, nearly missing other vehicles on multiple occasions, no injuries were reported despite the risk-laden maneuvers. The chase transitioned from vehicle to foot when, at approximately 6:12 a.m., the suspect ditched the Avalon near Mariposa and Melrose Avenue and fled across the northbound 101 Freeway, which momentarily was captured by SkyCal's aerial view.
The pursuit concluded when the suspect, clad in a Dodgers jersey, was located hiding under a tree and subsequently apprehended by LAPD officers at Kenmore and Melrose avenues in East Hollywood; this was further detailed by FOX LA's coverage. Despite the successful apprehension of the driver, the passenger who had been in the vehicle at the beginning of the chase remains at large, as ABC7 notes.
During the chase, officers observed the suspect throwing a weapon from the vehicle, which they later recovered; these events also raised alarms for many as the suspect at one point attempted to escape on a bicycle he found near the freeway, according to ABC7's report. As the pursuit stretched through the streets and the freeways of Los Angeles, the name of the suspect has not been released, and the exact charges they face have not yet been clarified, leaving some questions unanswered as the investigation continues.
