A juvenile girl was shot and killed inside an apartment in the 800 block of West Huntington Drive in Arcadia on Thursday morning, and the man accused of firing the gun was gone by the time officers got there. Arcadia police said the shooting happened about 11 a.m., and the girl was pronounced dead at the scene.
According to CBS Los Angeles, the suspect fled before officers arrived at the apartment, and the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department Homicide Bureau has since taken over the investigation. Separately, ABC7 reported that officers discovered a juvenile female suffering from a gunshot wound at the scene, and that the man believed to have fired the gun inside the home had already fled when police got there.
The victim was described as a teen girl and female juvenile, and the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Homicide Bureau took over the investigation. The victim's identity has not been confirmed publicly either way.
Victim's Name Withheld as Investigation Continues
Per a Yahoo News report, the victim died at the scene and her name was being withheld. The same report noted that a separate death in Pasadena involved a man who died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The Arcadia shooting and Pasadena death were linked because the alleged shooter fled to Pasadena and was located there about an hour later.
Investigators are urging anyone with information about the Arcadia shooting to contact homicide detectives at (323) 890-5500, per CBS Los Angeles. Anonymous tipsters can also reach Crime Stoppers at 1(800) 222-8477 or submit information through its website, lacrimestoppers.org.
Not the First Young Shooting Victim in the San Gabriel Valley This Year
The Arcadia case follows another shooting earlier this year that killed a teenager in the San Gabriel Valley. A 15-year-old boy was shot to death early on April 18 in Baldwin Park, according to the Southern California News Group, with the shooting occurring around 5:10 a.m. in the 12900 block of Bess Avenue near the 10 and 605 freeways. The boy was pronounced dead at the scene, and his identity had not been released at the time.
Two adults were also shot in that incident and remained in critical condition as of the following morning, the outlet reported. Authorities said at the time that no motive or suspect information was available, and detectives were still looking for possible witnesses. As with the Arcadia shooting now under investigation, the Baldwin Park case underscores how often these cases leave families and communities waiting for answers long after the immediate aftermath fades from headlines.
