Two suspects are now in custody after a reported home invasion in Odessa turned into an armed confrontation. The Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office announced via a social media post, detailing the arrest of Luis Charles, 26, and Odardy Maldonado-Rodriguez, 32. The incident, which occurred on August 19, involved the suspects forcing the victims into their garage at gunpoint. They later fled the scene when an alarm was accidentally triggered.
According to the Sheriff's Office, detectives were able to identify and apprehend the suspects thanks in part to the discovery of an AirTag tracking device, which had been taped beneath the victim's vehicle. Charles was arrested in Tampa last Wednesday, and Maldonado-Rodriguez was taken into custody in Pasco County two days later. The chilling nature of the crime has only just to begin to emerge from the shadows, with the suspects now facing charges including Armed Burglary of a Dwelling with Assault or Battery and Armed Kidnapping Commit Felony.
Sheriff Chad Chronister expressed relief at the capture of these individuals, stating, "To be ambushed at gunpoint in the very place you should feel safest is every family’s worst nightmare." His statement further outlined the sense of security that the Sheriff’s Office aims to restore among residents in the wake of such occurrences. "Thanks to the work of our detectives, these dangerous criminals are now behind bars where they belong, and the victims, along with our community, can rest a little easier," he said.
