An officer-involved shooting in DeKalb County has resulted in a teenage girl being hospitalized and a male detainee, following a confrontation at an apartment complex on S. Hairston Road. DeKalb County police were responding to reports of armed individuals at the Reserve at Stone Creek when the incident occurred yesterday afternoon, as reported by FOX 5 Atlanta.
Upon arrival, officers said to have encountered two people armed with firearms. During the ensuing investigation, one female was reportedly shot by police. A male was also taken into custody at the scene, where two firearms, including one with a drum-style magazine, were recovered. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation has been requested to look into the matter, as confirmed by both FOX 5 Atlanta and 11Alive.
Local residents were rattled by the shooting, with one telling reporters they had not heard gunfire but saw police quickly respond to one of the buildings. Neighbors also described an increase in gunshots over recent years, causing anxiety in the community. "It's scary," a resident, who goes by Felecia H., expressed in a statement obtained by FOX 5 Atlanta.
The parties involved in the shooting have not been publicly identified, and details surrounding the confrontation, such as its cause and whether any shots were fired at officers, remain unclear. Authorities are yet to disclose whether body camera footage captured the incident, and the condition of the hospitalized female has been labeled as stable, but further specifics have been withheld. A relative of the girl indicated to 11Alive that she is 17 years old.
DeKalb County had previously passed a non-binding resolution seeking restrictions on certain firearm accessories and advocating for higher age limits on gun purchases, though Georgia law continues to allow possession of high-capacity magazines.
