Two 19-year-old female hikers who were caught in a flash flood during an overnight trek in West Clear Creek, near Camp Verde, have been rescued, Yavapai County Sheriff's Office reported. The hiking duo was reported overdue on Friday evening after venturing out on Thursday, and a search operation was initiated when they failed to return.

The rescue mission began in earnest the next day, as Yavapai County deputies and Search and Rescue teams prepared to brave the challenging terrain at daybreak in response to a distressing text message sent by one of the hikers on Friday afternoon, indicating they'd been caught by rising waters and had limited resources. Severe weather conditions prevented immediate air support by DPS Ranger helicopter, yet hopes of a dawn-lit rescue bolstered the spirits of the search teams.

On Saturday morning, with weather conditions slightly improved, SAR teams took to the trails, enduring hours of treacherous hiking. It was at approximately 9 a.m. that "deputies were able to make contact via emergency text messaging with the girls," who disclosed being cold and wet but overall okay, and confirmed their whereabouts to the rescuers.

With this information, the DPS Ranger helicopter could finally traverse the skies, and around 10 a.m., the crew, with assistance from the deputy on the ground, succeeded in locating the hikers. They were swiftly picked up and returned to their waiting vehicles. While the timely rescue is a success, the Sheriff’s Office warns adventurers of the ongoing risks, as more rain could lead to further flash flooding in the area.

The Yavapai County Sheriff’s Office was quick to offer heartfelt thanks to the volunteers and DPS aircrew whose crucial support played a key role in this positive outcome.
