A late-night drive turned tragic on State Road 63 on October 4 when a vehicle was reported traveling the wrong way, leading to a collision that claimed one life and injured two others. According to a social media post by the Vigo County Sheriff's Office, deputies responded to the report around 11:20 p.m. and encountered the vehicle in question between Barnhardt Rd and Bolton Rd on St. Rd. 63; the wrong-way driver narrowly missed a deputy's vehicle before swerving dangerously close to a West Terre Haute Police vehicle.
The situation escalated as law enforcement lost sight of the vehicle for a moment and then discovered the aftermath of its collision with a pickup truck at the intersection of St. Rd. 63 and Barnhardt Rd where the wrong way driver after colliding head on was pronounced dead at the scene, while the pickup truck's two occupants were left with nonlife-threatening injuries and were promptly transported to a local hospital, according to the sheriff's office's report. Alcohol is suspected to have played a role in this dire incident, an indication of what might lie at the root of such needless risk and loss.
