Tulsa residents and commuters should prepare for a series of lane and ramp closures set to disrupt traffic over the next few years. According to the Oklahoma Department of Transportation, modifications are underway at the I-44 and US-75 interchange that will continue through the summer of 2028. In particular, eastbound I-44's narrows to one lane using the eastbound collector road at US-75, starting from 7 p.m. yesterday to 6 a.m. today, due to ongoing work in the area.
Further restrictions include closures of the east and westbound I-44 ramps to northbound US-75, with recommended detours involving eastbound I-244 to northbound US-75. Today, for surface repairs, westbound I-44 will also narrow to one lane at 33rd W. Ave., and the relevant westbound on-ramp will be closed from 9 a.m. to noon. While intended to improve traffic flow in the long term, these disruptions inevitably will test the patience of commuters as they navigate through the construction landscape.
Additional projects contributing to the traffic turmoil include the SH-51 (South leg IDL), which will be narrowed to two lanes between Houston Ave. and Denver Ave. from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. today for a routine bridge inspection. These infrastructure undertakings coincide with a broader region-wide effort to rejuvenate roadways, many of which have been earmarked for completion in 2026. This includes bridge rehabilitation on north and southbound US-75 between 56th St. N. and 66th St. N., extending through the summer of 2026, and interchange improvements in Catoosa, where the I-44 and SH-66 meet, with an anticipated completion in 2026 as well.
In Sand Springs, SH-97 drivers will face ongoing construction for pavement rehabilitation until November 2025, with Morrow Rd. completely closed at SH-97, and Wekiwa Rd. narrowed to one lane in each direction at SH-97. Meanwhile, US-75 bridge construction will continue at 141st St. in Glenpool through October 2025, causing narrower and shifted lanes, ramp closures, and a reduced speed limit. Moving through these areas may seem enduring an obstacle course, requiring both alertness and patience by motorists accustomed to smoother journeys.
