
Google has allocated $2.3 million to the Oklahoma Conservation Commission to fund the removal of invasive eastern red cedar trees in central Oklahoma, part of a broader $30 million push to restore watersheds near the company's massive Pryor data center. The money targets vulnerable areas within the Arkansas River Basin, where thirsty cedars have spread unchecked for decades, choking off water that would otherwise reach streams and aquifers.
The pledge comes as scrutiny mounts over just how much water Google's Pryor campus, sited on the Neosho River, actually consumes. According to The Journal Record, Google says the $2.3 million cedar-removal project aims to replenish more than 150 million gallons of water per year to Oklahoma water sources. That figure looks modest next to open records obtained by The Frontier, which found the Pryor facility used more than 1.1 billion gallons of water between July 2024 and June 2025, discharging roughly 253 million gallons of wastewater back into the Neosho River while the rest evaporated during server cooling.
Why Cedars Are the Target
Suzie Shin, data center sustainability manager for Google, said the company wants to offset water consumption at its facilities through projects like this one, according to the same report. The water replenishment estimate is based on project-related recharge calculations and reduced water use by the invasive trees themselves — a single mature eastern red cedar can absorb between 10 and 50 gallons of water a day, and dense stands can intercept up to 95% of incoming rainfall before it ever reaches a stream or aquifer, per research from Oklahoma State University Extension.
Trey Lam, executive director of the Oklahoma Conservation Commission, said the project will support collaborative conservation with partners, landowners and communities, per the Journal Record's reporting. He added that community collaboration is important for protecting the environment. The commission has already selected the vulnerable Arkansas River Basin sites, and conservation specialists plan to use mechanical removal alongside prescribed burns to keep the invasive cedars from creeping back.
A Century of Fire Suppression
The cedar problem traces back to how Oklahoma's landscape used to manage itself. Human- and lightning-caused fires burned across the state for roughly 10,000 years before 1800, and those historical wildfires kept eastern red cedar populations in check, the Journal Record reported. Once fire suppression took hold, the cedars took over the landscape largely unchecked — a trend documented statewide by data from the Natural Resources Conservation Service and Oklahoma State University showing Oklahoma loses about 300,000 acres of native prairie each year to redcedar encroachment, with more than 8 million acres already infested, according to the Southwest Ledger.
Beyond drinking up groundwater, the trees carry other costs. Eastern red cedars expand habitats for ticks and mosquitoes, and their volatile internal oils make them highly flammable — research from Pheasants Forever found the trees can act as explosive wildfire fuel, killing surrounding trees once internal temperatures hit just 150 degrees Fahrenheit. Dense cedar stands are known to launch airborne embers hundreds of yards ahead of a fire line.
State Funding Framework Already in Place
Google's grant plugs into an existing state mechanism. The Oklahoma Conservation Commission launched its Invasive Woody Species Cost-Share Program in October 2025, offering private landowners up to 90% reimbursement, capped at $50,000 per year, for mechanical and chemical cedar removal in high-priority watersheds. That program built on an earlier precedent: the Terry Peach North Canadian Watershed Restoration Act, passed in June 2023, which set aside $3.3 million for pilot brush clearing and hydrological impact studies along a 5,000-acre stretch of the North Canadian River Basin, according to the OU Daily.
Wetland restoration tied to the broader $30 million effort will require ongoing monitoring and maintenance, and project managers plan to schedule long-term upkeep such as recurring cedar removal rather than treating it as a one-time clearing. Shin said long-term oversight will determine the project's success. Project managers will also track conservation milestones every year going forward.
Big Pledge, Bigger Draw
Google's Oklahoma commitment fits into a larger corporate sustainability push. The company announced in June 2026 that it would invest more than $17 million in 97 watershed protection projects across seven states, part of a global goal to replenish 120% of the water its data centers consume by 2030, according to Data Centre Magazine. Still, only a portion of the remaining Oklahoma funds have a set destination — community feedback will determine where the rest of the water stewardship money is allocated, and Shin said Google wants to listen and evaluate community priorities before making those calls.
The Pryor campus, which first opened in 2011 and has since gone through at least five expansion phases, sits alongside newer Google developments in Stillwater and Muskogee County, part of what Hoodline previously reported as a multi-billion-dollar buildout backed by state-approved power agreements. Separately, reporting from KGOU found that the Pryor facility falls outside direct state water permit tracking because it buys treated water from MidAmerica Industrial Park rather than pumping groundwater or surface water under its own state permit — a gap that has drawn attention as lawmakers weigh how closely to regulate industrial water users. Oklahoma passed Senate Bill 259 in May 2026, mandating commercial groundwater metering and requiring new data centers seeking state groundwater permits to use closed-loop, low-water cooling systems instead of traditional evaporative towers, a measure Hoodline covered when it passed.
