Tragedy struck at Kaʻena Point over the weekend, as two young men have died after being found unresponsive in the ocean while fishing. The Honolulu Police Department confirmed the deaths after the individuals, both 18 years old, did not survive the incident. Hawaii News Now reported the pair was fishing on the rocks when one of them was swept away by the strong currents, prompting the other to jump into the sea in an attempt to help, ultimately leading to the tragic outcome. Their efforts to cling against the ocean's might went in vain as both failed to return.

Earlier reports by KHON2 detailed that a concerned hiker made the 911 call around 9:30 a.m. last Saturday upon spotting the distressing scene from Kaʻena Point State Trail. Ocean Safety operators were dispatched to search for the fishermen and managed to find them after scouring the waters for nearly half an hour. The men were immediately taken to shore and given CPR before being transported to a nearby emergency room in critical condition.

Mourners have visited the site, with friends and family members leaving flowers yesterday afternoon. Jon Kanno, a witness to the rescue efforts and a fellow angler, expressed the sorrow felt within the community, telling Hawaii News Now, "They’re fellow fishermen, you never expect to go out fishing and that might be your last day."

The area is known for its treacherous waters, and several local fishermen recognize the volatility of ocean conditions at Kaena Point. "I’ve seen waves come 10, 15 feet over the head of people on the rocks," noted Leslie Titcomb in an interview with Hawaii News Now. The Honolulu Police Department has stated that there are no signs of suspicious activity or foul play thus far.
