Over the weekend, Union County law enforcement took their support for Special Olympics North Carolina to new heights—literally. In a collaboration that saw the Union County Sheriff’s Office and the Monroe Police Department partner up, officers rappelled off the 19-story Pendo Building in downtown Raleigh. This stunt wasn't just for the thrill; it was part of the Over the Edge event, a fundraiser designed to support local Special Olympics athletes.
A recent social media post from the Union County Sheriff's Office gave the lowdown on the vertiginous venture. Having scaled down the towering facade of the Pendo Building, participating officers raised both funds and awareness. While descending a building might seem a step too daring for some, the event provided both participating officers and local supporters a unique way to rally around a noble cause.
According to the Union County Sheriff's Office Facebook post, the event not only gave participants an adrenaline rush but also the chance to help create opportunities, build confidence, and celebrate the abilities of Special Olympics athletes. The post expressed gratitude towards the community and donors, stating: "We would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to the generous donors who made this event possible and to our amazing community for always showing up with encouragement and support."
The money raised from the event is earmarked to benefit the Special Olympics NC athletes.
