Union County’s population has grown by more than 5,000 residents each year over the past 25 years, bringing changes to its rural areas. A draft of the Rural Land Use Plan, first developed in early 2024, is now open for public review. The plan aims to give landowners flexibility while protecting natural resources, maintaining the county’s rural character, and supporting agriculture. According to the Union County, the effort seeks to balance growth and preservation.
Since October of last year, Union County residents appointed by the Board of Commissioners have been working with County staff to develop a plan guiding future land use in the county’s rural areas. The goal is to provide property owners with options while maintaining the county’s rural character. The draft plan is scheduled to be presented to the Union County Land Use Board and later to the Board of Commissioners, which will make the final decision on its approval and any revisions.
The Union County Land Use Plan will be presented to the Land Use Board on October 21 and to the Board of Commissioners on November 17. Residents can review the draft and share feedback as part of the approval process. The plan aims to guide future development while maintaining the county’s rural areas.
