Colorado's head coach, Deion Sanders, condemned the behavior, asserting "that’s not indicative of who we are," in a sentiment echoed throughout the university's leadership.
CU's Athletic Director Rick George and Chancellor Justin Schwartz issued a joint statement, obtained by KUTV, denouncing the conduct as "deeply disappointing" and against the campus community's values of "respect, inclusion and integrity." The Big 12 Commissioner, Brett Yormark, reaffirmed the conference's stance, saying, "Hateful and discriminatory language has no home in the Big 12 Conference," as reported by CBS News Colorado. Yormark additionally highlighted the zero-tolerance policy for such behavior within the conference.
During the event's aftermath, Coach Sanders took to the media to extend an apology on the part of CU and its athletics department, mentioning that the despicable actions taken by the fans did not represent the student body accurately. "Our student body, our kids are phenomenal," Sanders told the media, in remarks captured by CBS News Colorado. He also outright stated his support for BYU, declaring, "we love you, we appreciate you and we support you."
This isn't the first instance where BYU has been subjected to offensive chants related to its religious connections. Similar occurrences were reported by the Universities of Oregon and Arizona, alongside the University of Southern California, highlighting a concerning pattern across college sports venues. CU Boulder seeks to remind attendees that entering a sporting event is a privilege that should be tempered with a level of conduct in line with the university's fan code. In statements released on social media and echoed by leadership, the school has underscored its commitment to maintaining a welcoming environment for "all individuals—students, staff, faculty, alumni, opposing fans and other visitors," as detailed by KUTV.
