The Hawaiian Islands are set to see a variety of weather patterns this week, according to the National Weather Service in Honolulu. High pressure will be the determining factor for much of the state's conditions, maintaining "moderate to locally breezy trades through this morning, then gradually ease through Wednesday," as stated on the NWS Honolulu website. The NWS forecasts focused shower activity primarily across windward and mauka regions, with the Big Island's Kona slopes potentially experiencing heavier showers and a stray thunderstorm.
Marine life and those on the water should take note: moderate to locally strong trades will begin to quickly weaken across the Hawaiian coastal waters today. A Small Craft Advisory remains in effect for the time being, implying boaters will need to exercise caution. Residents should also prepare for changes in the surf. The NWS reports that while surf along north and west facing shores will continue to drop off today, a series of swells are expected to keep "surf elevated" throughout the week.
In terms of land-based concerns, fire weather outlooks seem to remain mild. "Moderate to locally breezy trades will prevail through this morning under slightly unstable conditions that will produce some enhanced moisture and increase humidity levels," the NWS explains, mitigating the risk of critical fire weather conditions. Nevertheless, trades are anticipated to ease up somewhat through Wednesday, before picking up again towards the end of the week.
Aviation interests will not be left untouched by this week’s weather either. The NWS details that moderate to locally breezy trades will persist through the morning, easing gradually thereafter. For pilots, this means "MVFR conditions in heavier showers, briefly reducing visibility and/or ceilings," a situation that will need to be carefully monitored. With the promise of a strengthening high pressure system towards Thursday and Friday, the latter part of the week should see increased stability across state skies.
A final advisory from the NWS cautions seafarers with a Small Craft Advisory in effect until 6 PM HST this evening for several areas due to persistent strong trade winds. As the islands oscillate between these varying weather conditions, residents and visitors alike are advised to keep a close eye on updates from the National Weather Service as the week progresses.
