
A wanted felon died in a fire after barricading themselves in an apartment complex in Las Cruces, as per officials from the Doña Ana County Sheriff's Office (DASO). The deadly incident unfolded on the evening of Thursday, Oct. 16, leading law enforcement to the 900 block of Telshor Boulevard to apprehend the suspect.
Attempts to make contact were met with resistance; the individual, whose identity remains undisclosed, refused to exit and secured themselves within the premises. A standoff ensued, and during the tense hours that followed, a blaze ignited within the apartment complex, necessitating the evacuation of all residents. According to KTSM, the fire's origins are still under investigation.
The Las Cruces Fire Department responded with haste, tackling the fire and extinguishing it. In the aftermath, the wanted individual was located inside the structure and declared deceased at the scene, a turn of events confirmed by Dona Ana County officials. As reported by KFOX-TV, the incident resulted in no additional injuries.
DASO has taken the helm of the ongoing investigation and has announced that personnel will remain on-site to unravel the sequence of events that led to the fatal fire.
