Travel headaches are on the horizon for Bay Area commuters as the Missouri Department of Transportation has announced that they will be shutting down all westbound lanes of Interstate 44 under Interstate 270 for the second weekend in a row. The closure is set to begin next Friday at 10 p.m. and is due to necessary repairs on a bridge girder that sustained damage from an oversized load earlier in July. The heavy-duty maintenance is expected to wrap up with lanes reopening on October 20 by 5 a.m., just in time for the Monday morning rush.
According to Missouri Department of Transportation, not only will the westbound lanes of I-44 be inaccessible, but the ramp from northbound I-270 to westbound I-44 will also be off-limits to travelers. Fortunately, the ramp from southbound I-270 to westbound I-44 and the ramp from westbound Route 366 to northbound I-270 will stay open during the repairs. However, for those looking to navigate around this conjunction of closures, MoDOT suggests taking an alternative route via westbound Route 30, northbound Route 141, and then rejoining westbound I-44.
These closures are part of an ongoing effort to mend the infrastructural fabric of our daily commutes, an effort marred in July when an oversized load took a toll on the bridge's structural integrity. Drivers are advised to seek alternate routes or to leave extra time for their journeys as traffic snarls are anticipated. Missouri Department of Transportation anticipates backups and delays despite their efforts to coordinate traffic signals at Dougherty Ferry to accommodate the detouring vehicles.
For local commuters hoping to stick with their usual routes, it's a weekend to brace for longer travel times. "During this closure, drivers should still anticipate slow traffic in this area," warned Missouri Department of Transportation on their official website. They've been adjusting the signals at Dougherty Ferry to better manage the traffic flow, but acknowledgements remain that backups and delays are still likely in both directions. It's a dance of brake lights and patience—MoDOT suggests considering those alternate routes or allowing for additional travel time to navigate the tangled web of weekend construction.
